The Michigan Patient Advocate Designation is created with respects to the US statutes §§ 700.5506 to .5512, requires 2 witness and will become invalid should the patient be found to be pregnant. The document is a formal declaration by the patient who is usually referred to as the `Principal`, to legally choose the medical treatment they will receive should they become incapacitated to a degree that it becomes impossible for them to do so at that time. The Michigan patient advocate designation is a legally binding document which also enables a principal to select another person (Or `Agent`) to facilitate their health care treatment in the event of them becoming no longer able to. Michigan does not recognize living wills under State law. The ‘Patient Advocate Designation’ is used instead and is much like a medical power of attorney document.
